An Entrepreneur’s Life – The Ultimate Video Game!

This is a guest article by Titus Cash — what if you rewired your entrepreneurial life to that of a video game?
—————————————————————–

I admit it. I love video games.

As a child, this was the source of many fond memories, especially when I discovered the original Final Fantasy, and found that I LOVED Role Playing Games.

If you are not familiar, role playing games (aka RPGs), are games where you control a character with a mission; usually to save the world from imminent destruction, or rescue a princess from the clutches of an evil wizard. You begin the game on level 1 with a weak character and paltry attributes. The objective is to increase your character’s stats by completing a series of mini-missions, until your character is ready to take on the mighty boss.

Sound familiar?  It should because all of us are the main characters of our very own RPG, and that RPG is called life!

If you attack your goals and entrepreneurial success in a way much like an RPG, you can improve your current situation in no time.

Here are 4 ways being an entrepreneur is like being in an RPG:

1. Communication

RPG: Whenever you are playing an RPG and you don’t know what to do next, or where to go, or how to solve a problem, the first things to do is to start talking to the characters. Usually one of the town’s people will give you a clue that will help you on your way.

LIFE: When you are running your business, you will without a doubt come across new and dubious obstacles. You must remember to use resources like forums, Google, friends, etc to find the solution. Want to know what business to start? Ask people what problems they are facing. Communicate.

2. Level Up

RPG: If you take on the powerful bosses before you gain adequate experience, you will get spanked. Typically, you will want to fight bad guys that are at your current level to build your stats and gain money. Once you have grown in money and power, you can now buy better weapons and defeat more powerful bosses.

LIFE: Treat your big goals like bosses. Gain competencies and build your confidence all while keeping your eyes on the prize. Constantly take steps forward, even if they are small, and you will soon have the experience and resources you need.

3. Form a Power Team

RPG: In an RPG, very rarely does a single character win the game—rather, a strong physical warrior find a party with complimentary skills: a white mage to cure the party, a black mage for offense, and a thief for speed. This makes everyone win bigger because they bring something to table they cannot individually.

LIFE: Many entrepreneurs suffer from what I call “Lone Ranger Syndrome.” They want to do everything themselves because it’s cheaper, they can do it better, or simply pride.  Such a disposition will hold you back from winning the game faster.  Seek to identify your strengths. What are your weaknesses? Find others with a similar mission and complimentary attributes.  Build your team so you can go to war and win the game.

4. Build Your “Character”

RPG: In RPG’s, you gain experience and wisdom by venturing out into the terrain of the game.  As your experience and wisdom grows, so does your power and ability to conquer other foes.  If you don’t build experience, you don’t grow.  You stay weak.

LIFE: In life, you should seek to do the same by investing in your character just like it was a video game.  Continually educate yourself.   Venture out into the terrain of the game by taking action and doing.  While failure is imminent just like being defeated over-and-over in a video game, so are the dividends of those failures in terms of wisdom and character building.

Remember, time is scarcest resource any of us possess. What are you waiting for? Turn off the damn Nintendo and stop investing in the fantasy world and start investing in your world.

I can definitely relate to this because I grew up playing video games as well. I pretty much spent hours upon hours playing Final Fantasy 11 online with my friends and built up quite the character, network and power in the game.

It’s very similar to the Entrepreneurial life and I’ve found that I “level up” when I do things outside of my comfort zone. I also grow when I ask my mentors how they did certain things, the same way I got through difficult levels in the video games.

Great analogy here and LOVE the fastlane!

Wow I was just thinking about this a few weeks ago! Props for the article.

Like I always say “Life is a game”. I get blasted for saying that at times, but in reality its pretty close to a game like the article and Chris describes.

  • Welner

Wow! I keep getting reminded that I need help on all four of those areas (I guess it’s better than not acknowledging it, and ignoring it.)

You’re absolutely right when you say “time is scarcest resource any of us possess” Thanks for reminding us!

This reminds me of the old Zelda games I used to play on NES emulator on my computer years back. Was never huge into RPGs but action games apply to this as well.

I think a lot can be learned from playing video games. Just as long as you get away from them now and then and get out there and apply that to the real world.

Hah, I love the Final Fantasy series and have tried to come up with ways to ‘level up’ in life. Great post!

I’d add a 5th way being an entrepreneur is like being in an RPG:

Persistence. In video games, sometimes your character gets killed and you have to start over at a point further back. But you don’t quit the game, you keep trying until you succeed, usually by using a new approach. Same thing in life — if your business isn’t working out, keep trying and never quit the game.

Absolutely – a great reminder — it is virtually impossible to win any RPG (or any shooter) without expecting to get killed a few times. In entrepreneurship, “getting killed” is failure. With that failure, we have to learn how to press the “reset” button and start over, taking what we learned from it.

Just thought of another one….Bankruptcy is like getting a game over.  You lose all your progress, but the good news is you can always start a new game…and in entrepreneurship, you get to keep your experience points!

I am an occasional gamer also, just to add to this, running a business is also very similar to real-time strategy games like starcraft, if you’ve ever played you have to start with very limited resources and build a huge system with those resources in order to out beat your opponent.

  • Karson

This gave me a great laugh. Not because its dumb or wrong but because this is EXACTLY how I have thought about my business and its course. Great nerds think alike.
